One advantage of hunting a preserve is the ability to harvest a mature trophy buck in velvet. We have had some great early season hunts in the past with Rich and Joe taking beautiful full velvet trophy bucks. When we talked with Brian about bringing Luke up for a possible velvet hunt this year we knew it was getting close but decided to give it a try. Deer hunting in Ohio in early Seotember can bring you some warmer temperatures and this year was no exception. We were reaching into the low 90's during the afternoons and droping only into the high 60's overnight. These high temps make the deer move just before dark and right as the sun rises. Luke had a chance to experience hunting with us last year but the temperatures were in the single digits so he has now seen both extremes! "Lefty" had damage to his right side last winter but Luke re...

Remember back when you had two-a-day practices for high school football? Well they must be getting close because we are hot and sticky here in NE Ohio. We have been getting scattered thunderstorms everyday and the smell of county fair food is in the air! Don't look now but the sands of summer are slipping away and the dog days of summer will soon give way to the trophy bucks of F

all!

We have been getting some great evening photos of the mature bucks from the stands on the cooler evenings. They are still sporting their red coats of summer but soon they will begin shedding and turning more of a brownish color for Fall. The deer flies are still thick but if you can pick your time right the evenings are perfect. With the Ohio deer hunting season coming quickly it is nice to see that we have a great mix of huge typical bucks as well as some mo...

It is hard to believe that we are already into the middle of summer and fall is coming on quickly! The up side to that is that the antlers are finishing up and we are down to just over two months until Ohio deer season! The trophy bucks are enjoying a short break from the heat as we have been only reaching the low seventies during the last three days. The antlers are looking great and finishing strong. With just over a month of antler growing season left you can clearly see the monster bucks pulling ahead already.

We are busy getting stand maintenance and trails cleared and with just over two months left it is time to start looking at the list to make sure everything gets completed. Bees sprayed, shooting lanes cleared, and food plots clipped,... there is never any shortage of things to do as the 2018 deer season approaches!

If you have n...

It is finally that time of year when we have some new and exciting antler pictures to share. It is always hard on deer hunters for the three to four months after the monster bucks shed until the new antlers become easily seen. Then from here on out the excitement can grow until the beginning of Ohio deer hunting in September! The mature bucks are still pushing the main beams out and around but the tines are starting to pop as well. Most of these trophy bucks will grow long into August but for now we are getting a glimpse into the potential that this falls deer hunting may hold.

May 29, 2018

It has taken us a long time this year but I think that we have finally arrived at Summer! The trophy bucks are all starting to put on some great antler growth and they are also shedding the winter coats in favor of the lighter red hair of summer! The mature does are being very secretive now and we should be seeing those early fawns anytime. Once they have all shed their shaggy coats we should be able to get the trail cameras going for some early looks toward this fall. It's only four more months until we start deer hunting in Ohio!

We are well into our summer projects and the spring food plots have been completed and are greening up nicely. The monster bucks of this fall are hitting them hard and it is always exciting to see the potential as they grow each season. The mature bucks are always the slowest to show what they will have come fa...

The Peak-rut is upon us and now is the time to be in the woods! If you enjoy seeing lots of deer anytime of day then you should be headed to your stand. If you are an archery hunter it is going to be tough to get those trophy bucks to stop but if you can catch a mature buck in between love affairs he may be receptive to your bleat call or grunts.

We had another great weeked with two great trophy bucks and one of them was a monster buck! Ted was back with us on his fourth hunt and he finally had a chance with his Ten Point crossbow and took a great 217 typical buck that scored 197 typical! Ryan held out for his chance on a monster buck that we had seem on the first morning and finally laid his hands on a great 261" non-typical!

The weather finally dropped hard on us this week and with lows in the teens and highes in the thirties it only a...

The closer we get to November the hotter it gets around here and we are not talking about the temperatures! The bottom actually fell out this week with the temperatures and with lows in the 30's and highs in the 40"s it has created a great pre-rut show. The mature bucks are now chasing hard and while the does are not actually ready yet they are trying to stay out of the way. When those old trophy bucks swell up they are pretty impressive.

We were able to close the deal on another great non-typical monster buck this week that scored 350"! Always exciting to be a part of these hunts. Easy tracking job as he only travelled about sixty yards and what a reward was waiting when we got there!

The prime rut activity is just around the corner and we will continue to share the excitement as it unfolds! Give us a call if you would like to become part...

August is always like a teaser month for diehard Ohio deer hunters. You walk outside on the first cool mornings of summer and there is a heavy dew on the grass and a faint color change has started on some of the maple trees and it hits you that you still have just over a month left to wait! The Ohio trophy bucks are also hitting the home stretch and like the changing leaves you can see the velvet color starting to fading and tighten. Some of the redder hair of summer is already giving way to the short brown winter hair as they begin to get ready for fall.

This time of year is also the time to begin checking those stands. I know that I talk alot about this every year but it sure can ruin a great stand location if you have to spray Raid on the bees the day before an opener or worse yet get the surprise of your life while crawling into the s...
